Gastroenteritis going around

Only a few weeks into school and the Gastroenteritis or stomach bug is making its way around. This can be caused by a virus or bacteria and symptoms include, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain.

Prevention is better than treatment but the main stay of treatment is rehydration to replace loss fluid , rest and keeping comfortable. Usually medical treatment is not required unless and diarrhoea and vomiting becomes too debilatating.
The general guide line below should be followed,
  • Avoid dairy items, caffeine, alcohol and smoking
  • Allow the stomach to rest by stop eating solid foods
  • avoid rich food stuff such as spicy, sugary and fatty food
  • Drink boil cool water or filtered water but not straight tap water, electrolyte replacement such as Enerlyte and Gastrolyte is highly recommended. This can be purchased from a pharmacy without a prescription and can be easily made up and store in the fridge until needed.
  • Avoid sports drink which can be too strong for your sensitive stomach.
Once feeling a little better than eas yourself into eating by eating easy to digest foods such as bannas, toast.
We recommend paracetamol to reduce pain and fever over Ibuprofen such as Nurofen and other NSAIDS(non-steroidal anti-infammatory drugs) because these can upset your stomach. If can be tolerated then let the diarrhoea runs its course to flushout the unwanted foreign invaders but Diamide and Imodium are anti-diarrhoeal medicine which is available over-the-counter. Likewise with vomiting, Buccastem can be puchased via a pharmacist consultation if too troublesome.

  • Avoid direct contact with infected individuals
  • Frequent hand washing
  • Rotavirus vaccination
  • Drink bottled or boiled water
